I love coming here when I am in the mood for some yummy Mexican food. Although I have to be honest, I order the same thing every time and probably wouldn't order anything else. The first time I went, I had the jalapeno peppers appetizer and it was terrible. Like the frozen ones at the supermarket. But really, with the delicious chips and salsa, you don't need to order an appetizer. Just get a giant frozen margarita, the mixed strawberry-mango is absolutely fabulous. mmmmm.... brain freeze just thinking about it. And get the Tacos Al Pastor. Oh so yummy!!! mmmmm... I want some right now. The bean soup that comes with it is also good. But the tacos, squirted with some lime juice on top, are lip smacking good. Recommend it, but only what I had. Not sure about the other items on the menu.

Middle of the road. The prices are low, and here you're getting exactly what you pay for. It's certainly not bad, but it's mediocre at best. The fajita platters are the cheapest I've ever come across, and they do get the job done. If you're looking for mexican food and you're willing to sacrifice quality for price, this is where you want to go.

This is the best Mexican for the money I've had in Baton Rouge. I've eaten at Ninfa's and Serrano's near LSU, and both places seemed overpriced. La Carreta hits the sweet spot on price, with many plates being $8-$10, and only two or three plates being over $13. The La Carreta sauce (white queso with jalapenos) is great, and the salsa is some of the best I've had. I was really impressed with the service on a pretty busy Friday night. Our drinks were never empty, and all food that we ordered came out within 10 minutes.

Delicious, fresh, homemade salsa. Good chips. Really good guacamole and generally satisfying food. If you order a la carte, it can be cheap. I've never had a bad meal here although I find it tough to pay this much for Mexican food when you can get such great, authentic Mexican food elsewhere for half the price. Here, you're paying for the atmosphere. They usually have a live band at night. There's a salsa dancing night once a week. Their margaritas are strong and well priced. They have a huge selection of tequilla. A fun place to spend the evening.

I'm down with La Carreta. It's a chain out of Covington, Louisiana, if that can qualify for a chain. There is an extensive menu of low cost good eats lunch specials. I'm a likin' it.

For someone who doesn't really like Mexican food, I really do like La Carreta. They have a great menu selection and reasonable prices. You also get a ton of food (I don't think I've ever finished a full meal there!).

la carreta is by far the best mexican restaurant in baton rouge. when the food arrives, my husband and i stop talking and dig in. believe me, if you knew us personally..you would realize that it takes a miracle to keep us quiet.

One of the best Mexican places I have been to. Love the place. It lifts your spirits and food is great !

I had a shrimp wrap that was pretty good. Sari was our server and she did a good job. There was an issue at our table with one of the orders but I'll write about MY experience. The food came out at a decent time, but because we always had plenty of chips and salsa no one noticed the slight delay lol. Sari made a very tasty Arnold Palmer! The prices are fair so I would come back. I didn't give it five stars but it wasn't a mind blowing dinner, but it was pretty good.

Cheapest, best quality Mexican dishes I've ever had. This location in particular is superb! I love eating on the patio - it's so pretty there!

I enjoy this place but don't love it. Not sure why because the food is good, the service is quick, and we always get a table right away. I think it's because nothing on their menu is memorable. It's good, but it's something you can get anywhere. I also don't really like their salsa but my husband does. So yeah, I'm giving it 3 stars because the food is good and I can't pinpoint exactly what else I"m looking for.

While I wouldn't recommend la caretta immediately to someone who asked me for a good mexican restaurant, I also would not rule it out as a decent place to go. Their food is delicious, but for the price you pay it is only so-so. Years ago I would have given this place a 5 star review, but the last few times I have gone the portions have gotten smaller and smaller. The last time I went, there was about a tablespoon of beans on my plate and 3 pieces of chicken in my quesadilla. I have not been back since. While other people may have had better experiences, I probably will not be going back because of mine. I will not condemn the place though because they have given me some pretty tasty meals, but I think they only deserve 3 out of 5 stars.

Easily the worst Tex-Mex Food I have ever had. The salsa (key ingredient to Mexican restaurants) was straight from a jar. I watched the waitress pour it from the jar to the serving conatiner. Chips were way too salty for their own good. The menu was seriously lacking, especially compared to its average rivals. Our entrees took a while and were cold when we got them. The meat was not tender and juicy like I expected. Baton Rouge is not a Mexican food town, and La Carreta is just more evidence. Additionally, it seems as if the wait took over 45 minutes. Its a very popular place (no idea why, unless you have never had real Tex-Mex) and they didn't handle table turnover very well. The only thing I could see that would make this pplace enjoyable is the entertainment they bring in. Seem to recall a band performing (thought they sounded good) and maybe that explained the number of people. If you must, then go. But please read my "La Tiendita" review if you care about real Mexican food.

Mostly mediocre food and usually mediocre service. But it is relatively inexpensive. The cheese dip with chorizo is quite good.

This mexican restaurant is just ok with me. I've been to much better though. I might go back here if invited by a friend otherwise my choice would be a different mexican restaurant. When I ate here (only eaten here once), I ordered the tamales and my guest ordered the beef enchiladas dinner. I also ordered a drink (can't remember the name but it was ok...very heavy on the alcohol). The food was mediocre. Nothing to rave about. Nothing to complain about either. I've had better. Their refried beans were pretty good. I think judging refried beans is up to the person eating them. Someone may like their's chunky, others might like their's peppery, others might like their's smooth with an occassional whole bean floating around in them. I like mine semi smooth with random chunks of beans but the beans have to be soft and the skins easily chewable, not chewy, and not heavy on black pepper either. This restaurant served them just like I like them. The waiter didn't speak english hardly at all. Very hard to communicate other than pointing to the menu and saying "i'll have that!". A bunch of police officers walked in that night while we were eating so our waiter quickly started attending to them more than my table. That's a pet peeve with me!!!! I'm a paying customer too!..just as equal! I hope these mexican waiters soon learn American ettiquette of being a waiter!! Took him foreeeeeeever to bring the ticket to us too then to take the bill to process it.....ugh!! I hate waiting like that when I want to leave but don't want to cause a scene by snapping my fingers saying "EXCUSE ME"!

I have been a patron of La Carreta for almost 20 years. My college buddies and I used to hit up the Hammond location almost every day after class for fiesta hour or dinner...or sometimes just to study. Since then, I moved to Baton Rouge and low and behold, Saul opens a store 1/2 mile from my house!! The salsa can't be beat....but be sure not to fill up on it cause their entrees are delicioso. My favorites are the Chicken Fajitas (2 beans no rice), Burrito Verde, Mixed Fish Ceviche, Chipolte Shrimp, and Tacos de Carne Asada. The staff are very friendly, the food is always hot, and the Fiesta Is Always On!

I'm giving these guys 3 stars b/c it means A-ok. And they are. I've been emptying my pockets for these guys for years now and seen them grow into a Trump-like dynasty in southern Louisiana. I must point out that I said "emptying my pockets". This is my biggest issue with the franchise. Price. They raise their prices every year, it seems. Are the ingredients better? No. Is there more variety? No. Are the portions bigger? No. Are the margs stronger? No. It's a money grab because they need to pay for all of their new properties and they know locals will pay it. That being said, the food is...ok. There is a lot better Mexican food in town. I find the meals to be rather bland. Obviously the price hikes aren't going towards spices. I do eat here often because it is right by my house. I don't drink here often because their margaritas are way too expensive to enjoy. I usually have the chimichanga, fish tacos or taco salad. These are my go to's. The food is always consistent. Consistently average. Customer service? TOP NOTCH. That's one reason I do come back. They are always smiling, friendly and quick. La Carreta is a Baton Rouge institution now (started in Hammond). They better watch out or they're going to price themselves out of business when they come up against these new kids in town that are focusing on great TASTING food, not just food.

We go about 3 times a month and always order the same meal: steak and eggs. The last two times we went the steak tasted off...really off. We could not eat it. The service was also pretty slow and I was quite upset to see the waiter continue to bring tequila shots out to a woman there with her two small children when obviously she would be getting behind the wheel with them. Hopefully when we go this week it will be better. I always look forward to going but this location is letting me down.

Wow!!!! I just looked at me previous review and it's spot on IMHO. Let me give you the bad first. On my last visit they served me an old burrito. The steak on the inside was old and cold. The meat tasted like it sat up in a pot waiting to be used. I had them fix me another one and they still used more old meat but they throw it on the burner and BURNED it. Then they put in back inside the burrito....terrible right. The good, the service was awesome, it was the waiter's fault but the cooks trying to save a dollar and less work. Sorry, I'm not going back to that location and I've given them another try already.

We quit going to la Carretas on bluebonnet for our weekly happy hour margaritas because the food had just gotten so bad and the margarita prices had gone up (and they use some powdered stuff to mix into them). We decided to give the government location a try, since it was good a couple years ago on a dinner date with friends. The margaritas are good, but not hand mixed, I suspect they use the powdered stuff too. The flautas were good, crispy with plenty of seasoned chicken but they gave us a teaspoon of sour cream for 8 of them. We split the burrito al pastor, pulled pork with pineapples and chipotle. It was tasty, but the meat wasn't hot, and it was chopped, not pulled, as the menu said. The plate was ridiculously hot while the food wasn't. It makes me concerned about their food prep practices. It certainly isn't freshly prepared or even mixed for our meal. I smell microwave. All in all, decent for the price, and good happy hour deals.

Some of my favorite Mexican in town. They just redid the restaurant inside and out, so it is much nicer. Everything I've ordered on their menu has been great. Although, I had their table side guacamole the other night, and it was nothing special. I asked for spicy and got more of a lime cilantro flavor than anything else. My favorite is their chicken enchilada soup and their chicken quesadillas. The queso is yummy. The free salsa is a little on the spicy side. I just had their chicken fajitas. They were yummy as well. They have wheat tortillas. My brother in law loves the duck quesadillas. On some nights, they have live music. They have a nice fire pit on the back patio. Check them out!

Margaritas-2 for 1 on Monday! Good Salsa Gringo lunch and La Carreta special were both good-cleared our plates Love the atmosphere and decor Plenty Tv's Stage- so they either have bands or karaoke? Outside area is very nice Big clean bathroom Will go back!

Nasty food! It was dry and unseasoned...this was a disappointment because it seems that they believe they are serving great food because no one is complaining. This is not authentic Mexican food. It's not even acceptable food, seems like the chef was lazy and just didn't care about quality. Also, the waiter was nowhere to be found! Great happy hour deals tho..but without the food to supplement, it's pointless. Kona grill at Perkins is better.

First time for lunch but what a surprise! Food was very lacking in flavor and so was service. This is truly unfortunate. Salsa on the thin side but did have some spice and chips were fresh and warm. The only saving grace for the lunch.

I work near La Carreta and gave it another try after several months. The salsa was pleasantly spicier than I remember. The chicken tamale was a little different than the usual with subtle flavors.. The chicken flauta was good, too. The refried beans and rice were tasty and not so "heavy", if you know what I mean. The presentation on the square plate is visually an updated, fresher offering. I was delighted and satisfied with this latest visit. I started with one of the best mojitos I've tasted -- kudos to the bar on 12/14/12. Finally, their patio is big so if it's a nice day to eat outside head over there.

Still searching for a really authentic Mexican restaurant in Baton Rouge since just moving here. This was OK but not great. And it was a little pricey for what we received. The salsa, while spicey enough was on the thin side- more like thick tomato juice. I had tacos al pastor which were small ( de la calle) , but decent, but for what I paid, were way way over priced. Same with the beef tacos my husband ordered. Each was served with a small bolw of a tasty soup, but no rice or beans. Granted we each had a house margarita, but I don't think the bill should have been just shy of $45. The atmosphere was nice, I will keep on looking

I met a customer for lunch here because he had suggested it. It was ok food, but didn't really stick out to me. It was just ok Mexican food, but not being from Baton Rouge this might be the best place in town.

While passing by Baton Rouge we stopped at La Carreta. I know it makes no sense to go to a Mexican restaurant in another state when you live in Texas! But, who's judging!? (lol). We were actually very surprised and impressed by this place. The restaurant is very nice and well maintained. They kind of had a rock and roll theme going inside. They have outdoor and indoor seating. There was an art show of local artist going on in the back room and a live band playing in the main area. There was a full bar with digital televisions showing some games as well. Service was great and so was the food. Margaritas were amazing!! I really liked this restaurant! I wish it were in Houston!! Definitely stop by if you are in the area!

Deceptive about prices. Don't list margarita prices, and list side items improperly. They charged me for a shredded chicken quesadilla at the grilled chicken quesadilla price. I'm disappointed.

  • Trevor R.

In terms of Mexican food in Baton Rouge, La Caretta is mid-range. I would give it a 2.5/5. My problem is they charge quite a bit for their meals but the quality doesn't match up. They quality is below casa maria and 20% high costs. I've had a range of items from the quesadillas to enchiladas and burritos and it's all kind of Meh.

MANGO-RITA...the end, but not really... I find myself continuously craving La Carreta. I am a lover of all things Mexican and they have some great food, drinks, and service. It's another one of those locations you enter from the back (usually an indicator of greatness). The frozen margaritas are fantastic, as I mentioned before the Mangoritas are a personal weakness, but the Agave Nectar is delicious, as well, if you are a more 'on-the-rocks' drinker. I have had plenty on the menu, but I have to personally recommend the fish tacos, they have a fresh, lime-spritzed flavor that is just what I want out of my meal. Now having reminded myself how good it is, I will likely be making a beeline after I get off work for some dinner and drinks, Salud!

  • Michael P.

Pretty good. They use the grill well - things such as shrimp, and their specialties are tasty, but some of the food is just too cliche-ed, standard Mex restaurant must-haves that are offered up in perfunctory fashion that just drags down the rest of the meal. Nothing outstanding. Sometimes a bit of a processed or preservative flavor to the food -- think they don't emphasize the fresh or local ingredient thing, and that's coming to be more noticeable as diners' tastes evolve to more refined options vs. just spicy or quantity. Choose carefully from the menu and a good meal can be had, but get careless and you might as well do fast food mex.

It's a decent, place for lunch, but if you want real Mexican, skip it. Their salsa is good. (As usual, I filled up on chips and salsa.) The meal was slightly disappointing. I had a chicken burrito with a taco. The taco has the mouth feel that reminds me of cat food, enough said. Their burrito was a bit too salty. The beans were good according to me. (Not sure how my cube mate felt about them. Dealing with me and having IT security sitting next to us must have been hell for her that day.) The service was very good. For some reason, the waiter stacked all nine meals on his left arm, which had an ample padding of hot holders. He got them off decently, but it made me a little nervous that I could be wearing several meals if he slipped.

I love Mexican and La Carreta did not let me down! We sat outside and it was a bit chilly for me. A waiter saw me rub my arms and immediately lit the fireplace I was sitting next to. Then while perusing the menu I see these bean and cheese enchiladas with a side of chicken for 12.95. I'm vegetarian but I figure I'd just get the chicken to go and use it to make my grandmother something later. Not a problem! Our waitress was very accommodating and helped me make my selection by raving about those enchiladas. They did not dissapoint! Delicious with a kick. Not too spicy not greasy, nothing but perfection. Everything tasted fresh and I scarfed it down with gusto! We sat outside and it was quiet, however inside seemed very loud. There was a band and party going on but it was very loud.

My fave hangout place these days. I love the margaritas. I've tried the house and the strawberry margaritas so far. For food, I've tried the grilled chicken quesadillas and I really liked them. However, I do think that the prices are on the steep side. Also, I wish they'd start happy hours. I don't have a dog, but I like that they allow dogs for guests seated on the patio. Kinda sweet, methinks.

I honestly don't understand how anyone could give this restaurant more than 2 stars. the food is just not good. The service is pretty good but forget the food. Starting with the salsa. More like tomato juice than salsa. Chips just ok, many overcooked. the flauta was burnt and splitting in the middle. There was no flavor. This was the same with the enchilada. The meet had the texture of cardboard and just about the same flavor, or lack thereof. Don't waste your time.

11/18/2012 Update: Stephanie, one of the newer managers of La Carretta went very far out of her way to make sure that I not only returned to the restaurant to give them another try, but informed me that big changes had been made since my original review. I returned today and it was a great experience with great food and service. I went for lunch with a friend. Something special in itself is that La Carretta has lunch specials even on the weekend so unlike most restaurants that don't allow you to save a little money on the weekends, La Carretta does. We both ordered the Steak and eggs and it was very good. Also, salsa was delicious and chips were fresh. The sweet tea was excellent and overall, we had a very good experience to make up for the prior one. Also, there was a mistake in one order between the kitchen and the waitress, so they unexpectedly brought us a dessert to make up for the mishap. The dessert was AWESOME and very nice. Some sort of raspberry fried thing with ice cream... awesome. My point is the place has come a long way since two years ago. The food was great, service was great, atmosphere is very nice with a newly remodeled restaurant and they are always making changes to improve the place. I'll be back! My Original Review: I've been here before and it was good and the atmosphere was great, but I just went tonight and it was rough. I went with a group of six. Five out of the six of us thought the service was less than stellar and our food was brought out cold. We did sit on the new patio which was nice. The salsa wasn't very good this time... must have been a bad batch. The food was brought our table cold and no one really liked it except for the soups. Many had fajitas and I know when I have gotten fajitas here in the past they are brought to you sizzling which is a part of their effect. This time they were not making a sound at all. The service was also subpar. Our waiter got 2 out of 6 orders wrong and had to come verify them, he never refilled my drink without me asking and he was never around. He also was very rude to another waiter. One in the group asked for their food to be heated. They ended up taking half of his meal off his ticket. In summary, we were less than pleased with this visit.

I don't know if it's a chain restaurant or it's suppose to be authentic but I didn't find anything special here. However the guacamole was great! The tamales were ehhh, nothing much. I gave three stars because the service was friendly and awesome AND very patient since some of my friends took FOREVER to order. I will definitely order the guacamole when I come here next time.

Pros: Fast service Great mexican cheese dip Good entertainment Cons: The food is not as flavorful as I would expect. The beans are bland even with the cheese on top. A little salt and pepper would go a long way. The rice is dry. I had to add salsa to eat the rice. Bottom line. Have an adult beverage or two, eat an app and have a good time. The full dinner can be skipped.

La Caretta was my first Mexican experience in Baton Rouge, so I'm not sure what there is to compare it to here. The food was good and the frozen margaritas were really tasty, but service was a little slow and our waitress forgot our queso and we had to remind her to bring it once our entrees had already been served. It was a slow night (less than 20 people in the restaurant and there were at least 3 waitresses on), so I don't really have much sympathy for the oversight. I thought the food was all very good (I had the fish tacos), but as a vegetarian (I DO eat fish, just no other meat), I was a little annoyed at the "surprise" meat in the queso since that wasn't listed on the menu. Do I really have to ask if there is meat in everything in Louisiana? If you're going to list ingredients on your menu, don't forget to mention the beef you're also putting in there along with the hot peppers. How do people with food allergies handle it down here? Anyways, I tried a bite of the queso from a section that didn't have meat and it was really good so next time I go I'll be sure to ask for NO beef in my queso.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America.
